The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 and Dell Precision 5690 are the two most popular 16-inch mobile workstations. Both start around $2,500 and quickly climb past $5,000 with upgrades. Both have NVIDIA RTX professional GPUs, Intel Core Ultra processors, and ISV certifications for software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Ansys.

After running both through CAD workloads, rendering benchmarks, and compilation tests, here is which workstation earns its spot on an engineer’s desk.

Performance

Both can be configured with Intel Core Ultra 9 285H and NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada Generation laptop GPU with 16GB of VRAM. The performance difference is small: within 5% on most benchmarks, with each winning some tests.

The ThinkPad P1 manages thermals slightly better under sustained load. The dual-fan vapor chamber keeps the GPU clock stable during multi-hour renders. The chassis gets warm but not uncomfortable.

The Dell Precision 5690 has a more aggressive fan curve that keeps temperatures lower at the cost of noise. The fans are audible under load — not annoying, but present. The performance is excellent, with the RTX 5000 Ada handling complex CAD assemblies and real-time ray tracing without breaking a sweat.

Both are exceptionally powerful for laptops. Thermal management is slightly better on the ThinkPad. Noise is slightly lower on the Dell at idle.

Display

The ThinkPad P1 offers a 16-inch OLED (3840 x 2400) with 100% DCI-P3, factory-calibrated Delta E under 2, and 400 nits brightness. The OLED produces perfect blacks and vivid colors. For color-critical work — rendering, visualization, photo editing — it is stunning. The touchscreen option adds flexibility for reviewing models.

The Dell Precision 5690 offers a 16-inch IPS (3840 x 2400) with 100% Adobe RGB, factory-calibrated Delta E under 1.5, and 500 nits brightness. The IPS panel is brighter and more color-accurate than the ThinkPad’s OLED. For CAD and engineering work where color accuracy matters more than contrast, the Precision’s display is technically better.

If you do visual creative work alongside engineering: ThinkPad OLED. If you do purely CAD and engineering: Precision IPS.

Keyboard

The ThinkPad keyboard is legendary and the P1 continues the tradition. The 1.5mm travel, sculpted keys, and perfect spacing make long coding sessions comfortable. The TrackPoint (the red nub) is still there for those who love it. The glass trackpad is large and precise.

The Dell Precision keyboard is very good — 1.5mm travel, responsive keys, comfortable layout — but it does not have the ThinkPad magic. The trackpad is larger than the ThinkPad’s, which some prefer. No pointing stick.

The ThinkPad keyboard is the best on any laptop. If you type all day, this matters.

Ports and Expandability

The ThinkPad P1 includes: two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, HDMI 2.1, SD Express 7.0 card reader, and a headphone jack. RAM is user-upgradeable with two SODIMM slots. Two M.2 slots for storage.

The Dell Precision 5690 includes: two Thunderbolt 4, one USB-A, HDMI 2.1, microSD card reader, smart card reader, and a headphone jack. RAM is user-upgradeable. Two M.2 slots for storage.

The ThinkPad has more USB-A ports and a faster SD card reader. The Dell has a smart card reader for enterprise security. Both are repairable and upgradeable — a rarity in modern laptops.

Battery Life

Neither workstation has great battery life — high-performance components need power. Both last 5-7 hours of productivity work and 2-3 hours of intensive rendering. These are laptops meant to be plugged in for heavy work, with enough battery for meetings and mobility between outlets.

The Dell has a slightly larger battery (99.5Wh vs 90Wh) and lasts about 30 minutes longer in mixed use.

Verdict

The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 is the better mobile workstation for people who spend as much time writing code and documentation as they do running simulations and renders. The keyboard is the best in the business, the OLED display is stunning, and the port selection is more practical. It is the engineer’s laptop built by engineers.

The Dell Precision 5690 is the better mobile workstation for people who need maximum color accuracy for CAD work and prefer a larger trackpad. The display calibration is superb, and the slightly longer battery life helps during long meetings. It is the IT-managed fleet choice.

Both are excellent. The ThinkPad wins on keyboard and display beauty. The Precision wins on display accuracy and enterprise features. You cannot go wrong with either.
